Based on the Dragon Quest series of video games, Dragon Quest the television show was aired in 1990 by Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama. Saban brought 13 dubbed episodes to the USA and Canada. The show never achieved a prime time Saturday morning time slot in many cities (if any), it received the dubious honor of being on Entertainment Tonight's list of most violent animated programs, and Toriyama sued Saban because his name was not included in the English version's credits. Dragon Ball was originally a comic that was serialized in the magazine, Shuukan Shonen Jump, or Weekly Boy's Jump starting in 1984.
The TV series, which basically followed the book series but adding in more detail and some new plot, was initially called Dragon Ball and then was renamed Dragon Ball Z after Goku defeated Evil Piccolo Jr.
At this junction, the TV series is renamed Dragon Ball Z. In addition, at this time, we find out that Goku has a son, Gohan (named after his step father).
