The Dragunov Sniper Rifle (Russian: Снайперская винтовка Драгунова, Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, abbreviated SVD, GRAU index 6V1), is a semiautomatic rifle designed by Evgeniy Fedorovich Dragunov in the Soviet Union between 1958 and 1963.
In 1963, the Dragunov Sniper Rifle was accepted into the arsenal of the Soviet Army.
In the 1980s, Evgeniy Fedorovich Dragunov developed the SVDS, a version of the SVD with a folding metal stock, shortened (590mm) but heavier barrel, and a shortened flash suppressor, intended for paratroopers and motorized infantry.
Sniper - definition of Sniper in Encyclopedia (4368 words)
Semi-automatic sniper rifles are currently less common than bolt-action rifles, with the notable exception of the Russian Dragunov in 7.62x54 (the old Soviet rimmed battle rifle cartridge originally chambered in the Mosin-Nagant).
The Dragunov is relatively common in the sphere of influence of the former Eastern Block.
The Dragunov in 7.62x54 is not as precise as the M21, M40 or AW series.
