Drave (German: Drau, Slovenian and Croatian: Drava, Hungarian: Dráva) is a river in southern Central Europe, flowing East from Alto Adige, Italy through Carinthia, Austria, and Slovenia (145 km) then southeast, forming most of the Croatian-Hungarian border before joining the Danube near Osijek. Length: 725 km (450 mi).

Drave flows through Lienz, Spittal, Villach, Ferlach in Austria, Dravograd, Vuzenica, Muta, Ruše, Maribor, Ptuj, Ormož in Slovenia, Varaždin and Osijek in Croatia, and Barcs in Hungary. Drave is navigable (about 90 km) from Čađavica in Croatia to its outfall. Main tributaries of Drave are: Gail in Austria and Mislinja, Dravinja in Slovenia and Bednja in Croatia from the left, and Gurk in Austria and Mur (near Legrad) in Croatia from the right.

The Isel was not an attractive sight, a milky brown of meltwater from the Alpine glaciers.
But the Little Drau and other tributaries of the Isel come from the side valleys where there are no glaciers.
There is snow, of course, and meltwater can be a nuisance earlier in the warm afternoons of spring and early summer but in July and August the snow has gone from the lower slopes and the fishing really is at its sparkling best.

Rivers like the Gmundner Traun, the Salza, the Mur(former world record brown trout – 16kg), the Steyr, the Isel or the Drau are well known and attract people from all over the world.
But not only browns, rainbows, brookies and grayling are resident in these alpine streams, but also the danube salmon(hucho hucho) a relative of the siberian taimen (hucho taimen and hucho perri) lives there and the world record fish(35.1 kg) was only recently caught in the river Drau.
They discovered the rivers to be an excellent food supply during their stay in winter especially when the lakes freeze.
