The Drawing Center is a museum and educational center located in Lower Manhattan in New York City (USA). The Drawing Center recently was the source of controversy when it was declared as being a possible candidate for space within the new site of the World Trade Center. This controversy came about because of some of the art exhibits the museum displayed which depicted the U.S. government, the War in Iraq, and even the September 11 Attacks on the World Trade Center in a harsh light. Many families of those who had lost loved ones during the attacks on the World Trade Center were appalled that The Drawing Center could be a candidate for having space in what is to be a memorial for those lost in the attacks. Others, including representatives of The Drawing Center, argued that freedom of expression should be given to the artists, and the representatives of The Drawing Center refused requests to 'tone down' their exhibitions.
