Drawing Restraint 9
(2005)

Drawing Restraint 9 is a music album created by Björk in collaboration with her boyfriend Matthew Barney for his film of the same title. For this project Björk traveled to Japan to study ancient Japanese music. Several tracks are made with the sound of the shō, a Japanese instrument which contains 16 various reeds; the sho performances are from Mayumi Miyata, one of the world's greatest sho players. She also appears in the film, playing her instrument. The song "Holographic Entrypoint" features a Noh score and vocal performance by Shiro Nomura. Björk brought "Nameless" back from her 2003 tour, and, with the help of Leila, looped and edited it to create the track "Storm." Alternative folk singer Will Oldham (a.k.a. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) is featured on the first track, "Gratitude," singing a letter from Japanese fisherman to General Douglas MacArthur set to a melody by Björk. Salient » Drawing Restraint 9 (1259 words)
Most of the reviews that I have read of Drawing Restraint 9 which is in the current film festival have been written by film reviewers who chastise this movie as being a load of boring art-wank, overly self-indulgent, and deliberately esoteric.
Drawing Restraint 9 belongs within a series of works which Barney began in 1987, each a continuation and exploration of the same set of concerns.
In Drawing Restraint 9 her compositions are so well suited to the images with which we are presented, that they often seem to shape and guide the scenes.
