Description

The show dealt with themes around him living in a New York apartment with his teenage son, and relating to his ex-wife, while trying to date and make it as an editor. The show was notable for its frequent use of clips from old movies to express Martin' inner life and feelings, which leant it much of its quirky appeal. The show is mainly significant, however, for being the first sit-com to use cursing and nudity. This was possible because it was on a pay-cable channel, rather than free network TV. It was created by Marta Kauffman and David Crane (who went on to co-create Friends), and starred Brian Benben, Chris Demetral, Denny Dillon, Jeff Joseph and Wendie Malick. It first aired July 1990 on HBO, and was cancelled in March 1996. During the height of its popularity, reruns of the series were aired in prime time on the Fox Network, however this required episodes to be reedited to remove language and sexual content.
