The origin of the castle was a romanic keep, built around 1200, which has been extended to a castle during 1471-1474 by the master-builder Arnold von Westfalen. In the middle of the 16. century, an expansion in renaissance style took place and after a big fire in 1701 August der Starke arranged a reconstruction with a baroque configuration. Additionally, the collection-rooms, placed in the western wing, were created at this time during two periods. In the first hop (1723-1726) the "Silberzimmer", "Wappenzimmer" and the "Pretiosensaal" arose, whereas in the second hop (1727-1729) the "Kaminzimmer", "Juwelenzimmer", "Elfenbeinzimmer" and "Bronzezimmer" were constructed. During the turn of the century a reconstruction in the neo-renaissance style took place and afterwards insular variances and modernisations were done, like the installation of an underfloor heating and electric lights in 1914.
