Encyclopedia > Driss Chraibi

Driss Chraïbi (born July 15, 1926) is a Moroccan author whose novels deal with colonialism and are often semi-autobiographical. Born in El Jadida and educated in Casablanca, Chraïbi went to Paris in 1946 to study chemistry and neuropsychiatry before turning to literature and journalism. His first novel, The Simple Past, was published in 1954 and his subsequent writings have made Chraïbi the only Moroccan novelist to receive international attention.
