DrumMania (alternately drummania, abbreviated DM) is a video game created by Konami as part of the Bemani series. The player uses a simulated drum controller to play the notes of a chosen song's drum part as they are displayed on the screen. The game's music consists largely of rock and roll and J-Pop, many of which are covers by famous Japanese artists such as BeForU and notable Western artists such as Arch Enemy. Controller

DrumMania is played using a controller designed to imitate a drum set. Five pads are arrayed from left to right for the hi-hat, snare drum, high tom, low tom and cymbal. There is also a foot pedal for the bass drum near the snare and the high tom. During play, the player depresses the pads and steps on the pedal. The hi-hat stand has changed little since its invention. ... A drum kit (or drum set or trap set) is a collection of drums, cymbals and sometimes other percussion instruments, such as a cowbell, wood block, chimes or tambourines, arranged for convenient playing by a single drummer. ... To the right of these pads, there are three buttons, Left, Start and Right, which are used to select and decide in the selection screens. In those cases, the Left button is assigned to the snare drum pad, Right to the low tom, and Start to the cymbal.

Gameplay

The screen setup is simple. On the left side, notes scroll vertically downwards. Colorful animations for each song are displayed in right side of the screen. Each note scroll consists of 6 columns: one each for the Hi hat, snare drum, bass drum, hi tom, low tom and cymbal. Individual notes are represented by small colored bars that scroll downward in the columns. To play the correct note, the player must hit one or two of these pads and/or stomp the pedal when the note bars reach the yellow line. The note scroll in DrumMania is in essence a drum tablature timed with the music and placed vertically. A hi-hat, or hihat, is a type of cymbal and stand used as a typical part of a drum kit by percussionists in jazz, rock and roll, and other forms of contemporary popular music. ... The player's accuracy is judged for each note played, and while the individual note judgments have changed throughout the series, the current system uses Perfect, Great, Good, Poor, and Miss to evaluate performance of each note. Ratings of Poor or Miss will deplete the player's "Groove Gauge", while accurate play will replenish it. If the Groove Gauge is emptied completely, the game ends. Players will be able to play anywhere from three to five songs depending on the game's configuration, with the potential to earn one or two additional stages in certain versions of the game if performance is good enough.

At the completion of a song, players are given a letter rank for their performance which can range anywhere from E to A, as well as S and SS depending on how well the song was played, and how the particular release of the game being played computes ranks.

Generally, the breakdown is as follow:

  • If there was only "perfect" and "great", while "perfect" is >=90%, player will score a "SS"
  • If <= 5% of notes are good, miss or poor, the score will be an "S"

In a 3-stage setting, players who receive a combination of "S,S,S" (2nd-7th Mix) or "S,S,A" (8th Mix onwards) will get to play an "Extra Stage". In some versions, players who get an S on "Extra Stage" may play the "Encore Stage". From 10th mix on, player will need 95% "perfect" to get "Encore Stage". And from 9th mix (but not 10th mix), having 98% "perfect" will allow player to play "Premium Encore". To reach those stage, player cannot use auto-accompaniment (in which many players would probably have used, especially the auto-bass), and during the encore/premium encore player cannot play a level above the song they used for the extra stage (for example, if they play basic on extra, they can only play basic in encore)

Because DrumMania only has five drum pads and one bass pedal, each pad may produce different sounds at different points in a song. For example, the low tom will sometimes act as a floor tom, and both the hi-hat and ride cymbal often take on the role of crash cymbals. Less commonly, parts of the drum sets will produce more unusual sounds, such as vocals or sound effects. A floor tom is a double-headed tom-tom drum usually equipped with legs (usually three) mounted along the side, though they are quite often attached to a cymbal stand by using a clamp. ... The hi-hat stand has changed little since its invention. ... A Zildjian 22 Z Custom Power Ride A ride cymbal is a type of cymbal that is a standard part of most drum kits. ... For the handheld type of cymbal, see Clash cymbals. ...

  • Drumsticks

They initially come equipped with a pair of drumsticks attached to the machine, though some players bring their own drumsticks, and some arcades even remove the stock drumsticks and replace them with non-tethered ones. A drum stick is an item used to hit percussion instruments to produce sound. ...

  • Scroll Speeds

Adjusts the speed of how sequence of notes flows on the screen.

To change the scroll speed during music selection, just step on the Bass Drum twice. (For the first Drummania/Percussion Freaks, hit the high-hat→snare→high-hat→high-hat→snare→high-hat→bass drum.) During game play, to change the scroll speed, hold start button and press left (-0.5x) or right arrow (+0.5x).

  • BEGINNER, STANDARD, NON-STOP

For EASY and BEGINNER modes, the scroll speed is set to 1.0x and AUTO cannot be utilised. You will only be allowed to choose to specified number of songs to practice though.

With STANDARD and NON-STOP, you be allowed to choose a wide varity of songs alongside with difficulty modes: BASIC, ADVANCED, and EXTREME. This can be toggled by hitting the hi-hat twice. The difficulties of the songs are ranked out of 10 (1st-3rd mix) or out of 99 (4th mix onwards). The extreme version of a song usually resembles a real drum part, thus making the game sufficiently challenging for advanced players.

NON-STOP is abolished with the release of Drummania V4.

  • TIGHT

When this option is set to ON, the game operates as usual. When you hit the pads when notes are not available, you will be penalised with a MISS.

  • HAZARD

This mode of play is first introduced with the release of Drummania V2 but is abolished with the release of Drummania V4.

HAZARD allows players to play stages as usual with the exception of failing the stage (STAGE FAILED) whenever 2 MISS or POOR occurs during the stage. Players who completes this feat will be awarded a bonus of 8310 points and a HAZARD appears on the song played (E-AMUSE only).

HAZARD cannot be used in BATTLE or Session Linking.

  • AUTO

AUTO can be used to omit the Bass Drum, Hi-hat or Cymbal from gameplay, allowing players to concentrate the rest of the Drummania set.

  • Skill points (SP)

Only available with the use of the e-AMUSEMENT pass by Konami, players can be ranked in the World Ranking and songs previously played are recorded and stored in the card.

SP is calculated depending on the difficulty of the song played, amount of perfects in a particular song and number of songs played.

In DMV2, upon acquiring 400SP, players can unlock songs from EXTRA STAGE, allowing them to play these songs in STANDARD stages.

  • Gitado King (ギタドキング)

An Internet Ranking system, only playable though e-AMUSEMENT passes, it is a competition which allows top DM players to compete based on the top records of 5 songs in Drummania V.

Gitado King 2 was introduced in Drummania V2 in January 2006, where “LIVE2GO!! The cup” combined with the preliminary round of BEMANI top run car championship.

  • Gitado Tawa (ギタドスロット)

An Internet Ranking system like Gitado King, playable only though e-AMUSEMENT in Drummania V Playstation 2 game.

  • Gitado Chanko (ギタドチャンコ)

Playable only through e-AMUSEMENT in Drummania V2, it allows players to unlock songs based on a mini-game.

  • Titles

Only available with e-AMUSEMENT in Drummania V3, it allows players to earn titles and this will be reflected on the use of the e-AMUSEMENT pass. An example of the title would be Double Dasher, upon winning 20 times in BATTLE without a single loss.

  • BATTLE (Nationwide/Within Store)

Only available with e-AMUSEMENT from Drummania V3 onwards, it allows players to compete with other players in Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan with a song of their choice.

In this mode of play, players first choose a class of their choice to play in from A1~D3 (11 stages). Once the class is selected on a e-AMUSEMENT pass, it cannot be changed. The choice of their class also affects the diffculty of the songs players can play.

Players are first matched with another player from the same class, or 1 class higher or lower. If a player isn't found after a song is selected for 30 seconds, a CPU (Computer) will play with you instead.

Players can also specify to rank the song played based on NORMAL, PERFECT or COMBO.

Classing doesn't apply to players Within Stores.

VIP Classes

Players can be promoted to such classes if they surpass the A1 class in V3, regardless of skill points. VIP classes include the S and the SS class. In these classes, there is an item called the Battle Stone, where players can gain 1 if they defeat an opponent from any VIP battle class or lose 1 if they are defeated. The total number of battle stones that a player has is shown on the battle mode screen after the player confirms the battle song.

In addition, some titles are based on the amount of stones you have collected.

Session Linking

One of the major selling points of DrumMania is its ability to be linked to another of Konami's Bemani games, GuitarFreaks. This allows up to 3 players to get together for a virtual jam session. When set up correctly, the music will play from both games, and the players' guitar and drum sounds will be relayed between the two games as well. This is known for being quite loud and extravagant at times. GuitarFreaksV3 arcade game in Japan alongside DrumManiaV3. ...

Konami's numbering scheme for the GuitarFreaks and DrumMania series is such that the current release of DrumMania is numbered one less than the current release of GuitarFreaks. For example, as of this writing, GuitarFreaks 11thMIX can be linked with DrumMania 10thMIX. This is necessary due to the fact that only DrumMania 1stMIX was released on Konami's System 573 Analog hardware, whereas both GuitarFreaks 1stMIX and GuitarFreaks 2ndMIX were released on the same platform, and a System 573 Analog board cannot link to a System 573 Digital board, on which the following nine releases of both were made. Additionally, a PercussionFreaks game cannot be linked to a GuitarFreaks game, as despite being essentially the same game as DrumMania, PercussionFreaks units lack link hardware.

This naming system changed completely with the 2005 release of DrumMania V & GuitarFreaks V, with the "V" representing the fifth anniversary of the series. This tradition will be continued, as Drummania V2 and Guitar Freaks V2 was released in November. Otherwise, the functionality is the same.

Super Session

Seen only in two releases each of GuitarFreaks and DrumMania, Super Session (or Multi Session) allowed the games to be linked up with Keyboardmania 3rdMIX as well. In addition to having three players control the guitars and drums, two more could be added playing along on keyboards. However, when linked with Keyboardmania, only about a dozen songs are available to play. Keyboardmania 3rd Mix can be linked with GuitarFreaks 5thMIX and DrumMania 4thMIX, or GuitarFreaks 6thMIX and DrumMania 5thMIX. Keyboardmania (alternately KEYBOARD MANIA, and abbreviated KBM) is a rhythm video game created by the Bemani division of Konami. ...

DrumMania V4 is the latest version of the DrumMania series, and it links to GuitarFreaks V4. They are essentially DM 14thMIX and GF 15thMIX, but the games had been united with a single version number since Drummania V. Unlike previous mixes, there is not a set encore stage. Instead, there are many which become unlocked over time. The requirement for getting an encore stage is getting 98% perfect or more on an Extra stage.

Notable Songs

Drummania 3rd Mix

  • Daydream: Composed by Mutsuhiko Izumi, it was the first song to be rated a 99 on Extreme. With an almost constant and very rapid roll on the cymbal, as well as other very fast rolls on the toms at the end of the song, it is extremely difficult to full combo - much less achieve an SS ranking. However, a Japanese player was successful in scoring a HAZARD, FULL COMBO, SS by using 3 drumsticks. 2 drumsticks are used to create continuous rollings on the cymbal.

Drummania 4th Mix

  • The Least 100 Seconds: Hirofumi Sasaki, it is the second song to achieve a 99 difficulty ranking and still retains this difficulty in Drummania V4 due to its incredibly difficult drum solo. It is also considered possibly the hardest song in the entire Drummania series.

Drummania 5th Mix

  • 子供の落書き帳 (Children's Sketchbook): Another song by Hirofumi Sasaki with a 67 Basic difficulty which is the hardest song on Basic and a 98 difficulty ranting on Extreme as of Drummania V3, barely reaching The Least 100 Secs. and Day Dream's 99 difficulty ratings. It is a revival of Bach's classical masterpiece, "Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring" with newly added rock guitar harmony and solo.
  • Herring Roe: Extremely difficult because it requires fast rolling on one hand. In the beginning and end consistent rolls must be played on the hi-hat with the left hand, during the middle there is a long stretch of consistent one hand rolls on the cymbal for the right hand.

Drummania 6th Mix

  • Model DD series (Drummania 6th Mix - V4): Supposedly a sequel to Daydream, Mutsuhiko Izumi's Model DD songs are among the most difficult in Drummania, featuring fast and relentless cymbal rhythms throughout all the songs. Typically, a new Model DD is included in each new mix of DrumMania (e.g. Model DD7, MODEL DD8), although the number of the song does not correspond with the number of the mix in which it is found.

Drummania 8th Mix

  • Used To Rock'n'Roll: A long version song by Brad Holms most notable for it being considered "Un-SS-able". Despite it only being an 80 (as according to Drummania V2's difficulty; 64 as per in Drummania's 8th Mix difficulty) and not being a particularly difficult song, there are two sections in it containing rolls on both the hi-hat and cymbal. The rolls are fast, but alone they would be simple. However, playing them at the same time, each with only one hand makes them very difficult to combo, and practically impossible to not get a number of "Good". According to Drummania V3's e-AMUSEMENT Internet Ranking, this song has been HAZARD cleared by two players.

Drummania 9th Mix

  • Agnus Dei: One of the most popular songs for players just reaching "high-level" play.
  • Funky Sonic World: Basically the fastest song at 400 BPM (beats per minute), also with the highest note count of a normal-length song (nearly 1400). It's made up of consistent but fast and tiring rhythms. Players generally play this as a test of stamina and concentration.
  • Timepiece Phase II: The difficulty of the song which created by Hirofumi Sasaki is very evident. The song was first listed as a Premium Stage and listed into Extra Stage at the 10th mix. The arrangement is rarely seen.

Drummania 10th Mix

  • 赤い鈴 (Akai Suzu): One of the hardest "long" songs, due to the somewhat unique jazz-style drumming involved, combined with many quick rolls and a generally sparse pattern toward the middle of the song.
  • Dragon Blade: Arguably one of the most popular songs, and considered to be "overplayed" by some. Dragon Blade is not particularly difficult (rated only 62 on the Extreme difficulty setting).
  • 鬼姫 (Onihime): Another of the series' hardest songs, Onihime joins The Least 100 Seconds [Extreme] and Daydream [Extreme] in the series to receive a 99 difficulty rating, yet falls to a 95 difficulty rating in Drummania V3.[1] Whereas The Least 100 Seconds is difficult because of an extremely difficult solo mid-song, Onihime is littered with extremely fast drum fills and rhythm changes. It's only available as an Encore Stage song in Drummania 10th Mix, an Extra Stage song in Drummania V, but is available for normal play from Drummania V2 and onwards.

Drummania V

  • Panasonic Youth: Not one of the most popular but certainly one of the most difficult and esoteric additions to this Japanese game. The song, by American mathcore band Dillinger Escape Plan, is extremely heavy and contains many complex and fast rhythms. Many players have trouble with Panasonic Youth because of its deliberate avoidance of the 4/4 time signature that most popular music uses.

Mathcore (also known as technical metalcore, technical hardcore, and math metal) is a style of metalcore recognized for a high level of technical musicianship. ... Dillinger Escape Plan is a mathcore band that integrates grindcore with a little bit of free jazz via variating time signatures and free jazz guitar interludes. ...

Drummania V2

  • リライト (Rewrite): A song by popular rock band Asian Kung-Fu Generation. A lot of the song's fame stems from the anime, Full Metal Alchemist, as it was used in its fourth intro song. As a result, this song tends to be a fairly popular choice. However, the version used for Drummania V2 is different than the actual song in the sense the rock elements are softer. However, this was not Asian Kung-Fu Generation's first Drummania song. Their first song was N.G.S. in Drummania V, and it was not remixed in any form.
  • over there: The Premium Encore stage from Drummania V2. Notably difficult for consistent bass pedals, complex crossovers, and fast rolls.

Drummania V3

  • Model FT 2: The latest offer of Mutsuhiko Izumi, it's a continuation of the Fairy Tales song from Drummania V. What's particularly notable about it is that it has a 'Miracle Version'; which is the same song with a harder tablature, being the latest with a 99 difficulty rating. However, despite its difficulty it was reduced to 98 in Drummania V4.

Drummania V4

  • 遠雷~遠くにある明かり~ (Enrai ~Tooku ni Aru Akari~): A song by High and Mighty Color. This song also stems from the anime, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: Special Edition, as it was used in its third ending song. Again, this song was rated the one of most often played song in the entire Drummania song list.

DrumMania for PlayStation 2 Review - PlayStation 2 DrumMania Review (591 words)
DrumMania is just as much fun as the other games in the series, but it definitely has a steeper learning curve than any other game in the Bemani line.
