DuPage County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 904,161. This county is part of Chicagoland. The county is divided into nine different townships: Downers Grove (North and South), Lisle, Naperville, York, Milton, Winfield, Addison, Bloomingdale & Wayne.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 872 km˛ (337 mi˛). 864 km˛ (334 mi˛) of it is land and 8 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 904,161 people, 325,601 households, and 234,432 families residing in the county. The population density is 1,046/km˛ (2,710/mi˛). There are 335,621 housing units at an average density of 388/km˛ (1,006/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 84.05% White, 3.05% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 7.88% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.12% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 9.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 325,601 households out of which 37.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.90% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.27.


In the county the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 32.40% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 9.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $67,887, and the median income for a family is $79,314. Males have a median income of $52,372 versus $35,450 for females. The per capita income for the county is $31,315. 3.60% of the population and 2.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.90% of those under the age of 18 and 4.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
