Early life and education
Born in Corning, New York, in 1938, he began playing at age five, emulating his cowboy hero, Gene Autry. His family moved west to Phoenix, Arizona in the 1950s. Duane graduated from Coolidge High School. Duane met his longtime partner, co-writer and producer, Lee Hazlewood. Together, they created a successful formula based upon Duane's unique approach to the guitar, and Lee's experimental vision in the recording studio. Style Eddy introduced a unique, twangy sound to Rock and Roll guitar. As John Fogerty wrote in Rolling Stone about his style; "It was one of those untouchable, unique things...Duane Eddy was the front guy, the first rock & roll guitar god." Combining strong, dramatic, single-note melodies, the bending of the low strings, and a combination of echo, vibrato bar (Bigsby), and tremolo, he produced a signature sound that was unlike anything yet heard - the sound that would be featured on an unprecedented string of thirty-four chart singles, fifteen of which made the top forty and sales of over 100 million worldwide. Later in his career, Eddy was interviewed by John Fogerty for Musician magazine about his style. Fogerty called it '"big" both in a sense of it being new and the actual sound quality itself. Eddy told Fogerty, "I knew we had to have something big... We did go for a big sound. I have to give a lot of credit to Lee Hazlewood. He mixed things for AM radio in those days so that they would come rockin out of the radio." Elements of country, blues, jazz and Gospel infused his instrumentals. They had evocative titles like, Rebel Rouser, Forty Miles of Bad Road, Cannonball, The Lonely One, Shazam, and Some Kind-a Earthquake (which has the distinction of being the shortest song to break into the Top 40, clocking in at 1:17). They were filled with rebel yells and brilliant sax breaks. The worldwide popularity of these records, beginning with Moovin' and Groovin’ in 1958, broke open the doors for Rock and Roll instrumental music. His band, The Rebels, featured musicians who were to become some of the world's best-known session players. Sax players Steve Douglas and Jim Horn, and pianist Larry Knechtel, have been heard on hundreds of hit records, becoming members of the famous "Wrecking Crew" of Phil Spector in the 1960s, and touring with a very elite group of artists through the years. An amazing group of legendary players hit the road in early 1983, showing up at small, intimate clubs. Friends of Duane's, some old, some new, had put this band together wanting to give the fans a chance to hear him in a unique setting - Don Randi on keyboards, Hal Blaine on drums, Steve Douglas on sax, and to Duane's pleasant surprise, Ry Cooder on guitar. Needless to say, this group rocked, and the lines around the block and the rave reviews said it all. Later that year, film soundtracks introduced Duane Eddy's music to millions as they watched Forrest Gump being chased by a pickup truck full of rednecks as he runs across a football field to the sound of Rebel Rouser. Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers used The Trembler, a track written by Duane and Ravi Shankar, to help create a spine-chilling scene set against a violent thunderstorm in the desert. 1994 (MCMXCIV) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar, and was designated as the International Year of the Family and the International Year of the Sport and the Olympic Ideal by United Nations. ...

In more recent film work, Duane joined Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack of Broken Arrow, starring John Travolta. Duane’s unique guitar sound was first choice to be the “voice” for the villain’s theme. To quote Mr. Zimmer, "I always thought that Duane's style was being ripped off by the spaghetti westerns. This time I got the real thing". This dark and moody piece was also used as a recurring theme in Wes Craven's hit film, Scream 2. Although he never won an Oscar for any of his movie performances, the comedian Bob Hope received two honorary Oscars for his contributions to cinema. ...

Asked by Musician magazine how he felt about influencing generations of musicians, Eddy commented that it "is an unexpected bonus. It makes me feel more important than I otherwise would. It's a confirmation, many years later, that it was the right thing. And we had no way of knowing at the time. We got confirmation in the fact that the records were hits. That's the first big joy. But after it dies down... Then suddenly somebody comes along and says, 'You started me in the business.'" Amongst those who openly acknowledge his influence include George Harrison, Dave Davies (The Kinks), Hank Marvin and The Ventures.
Tours At the very beginning of his career Duane was on the road to meet demands for personal appearances. He appeared on Irving Feld's "A Caravan of Stars" and other similar packages around the USA. With his success growing across the world he toured the UK with Bobby Darin as headliner, audience reaction demanded that their roles be reversed and Duane became the headliner. He was due to headline a UK Package Tour with The Beatles in support but other committments prevented this and Roy Orbison took his place - this was the first major tour that brokeThe Beatles into national prominence in the United Kingdom. He has toured with just about every major name in Rock'n'Roll except Elvis Presley and in the 1980's headlined a sell-out tour of the UK with The Crickets and Tommy Roe. His personal appearances demostrate his constant search for musical perfection - he only employs the best musicians. His playing is quite remarkable in as much as he replicates the sound of his guitar on record and he also is known to perform impromptu requests soslo for adiences in his regular encores. One memorable night in Northampton, England the aidience would not let him go for a full half hour after the theatre should have closed!! He is very popular with fellow musicians and has always taken great care of his supporting muscicians whilst on tour resulting in many long standing relationships.
Signature Guitars In 1960 Guild Guitars introduced the Duane Eddy Models DE 400 and the deluxe DE-500 the model was reintroduced briefly in 1978 to mark Duane's 25 years in the music business - it was featured on British TV as his long standing fan club - The Duane Eddy Circle imported 10 for members who appeared playing them on breakfast TV. In 1998 Grestch Guitars introduced the Duane Eddy 6120. The Chet Atkins model had long been associated with Duane on album covers, in person appearances and in recording studios. The guitar is rated as probably the best of its genre. The colours available were green and the world famous orange which always photographs red for some reason. In 2003 Gibson Guitars introduced the Duane Eddy model which had some interesting refinements over the Grestch at the time of writing this instrument is still on catalogue and is popluar with collectors and musicians alike. Duane Eddy is the only guitarist to have had three signature models by different manufacturers.
Fan Clubs/Appreciation Societies From the beginning of his career Duane had had fan clubs. Initially organised by his record companies Jamie and later RCA Victor these waned in the early 1960's and were replaced by The Duane Eddy Appreciation Society in the UK. This closed on the late 1960's as Duane's chart success declined. However, in 1975 with the revival of chart success with "Play Me Like You Play Your Guitar" Duane toured the UK and was approached by long time fan Michael Richards to re-establish a UK fan base. Michael (Mike) had been introduced to Duane's music by school pal Dave Davies who later formed The Kinks with his brother Ray. The idea was acceptable to Duane and the "Duane Eddy Circle of Friends" was formed. A magazine entitled "Twangsville" soon ensued as did an annual "Duane Eddy Convention". For a time in the 1980's the Duane Eddy Convention was held at the world famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in Frith Street in London's West End. Sell out attendance was the norm.
The "Duane Eddy Circle", "Twangsville" and The Annual Conventions (Held in London) have flourished to this day. The Duane Eddy Circle is managed by Professor Arthur Moir who can be contacted at a.j.moir@sheffield.ac.uk The membership is worldwide which is a testament to the influence that Duane Eddy has had throughout his lifetime. He has always found time to meet his fanbase and his quiet friendly approach serves to cement his popularity.
Forthcoming Projects He is currently working on a new project with Eb & Flo Records, an album is nearing completion to mark his sensational 50 years in the music business.
