Language While most people in Zürich speak at least some English or French, many people in the small town of Dübendorf speak only German. Switzerdeutsch (Swiss German) is the language spoken, although nearly everyone will automatically switch their speech to High German for non-Switzerdeutsch speakers. Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch, Schwyzerdütsch, Schwiizerdütsch, Schwyzertütsch, Schwizertitsch) is any of the Alemannic dialects spoken in Switzerland. ...
An interesting characteristic of Switzerdeutsch is the inclusion of words from both French and Italian. For instance, most people speaking Switzerdeutsch will say "merci" and "ciao" more often than, or in exclusion to their German counterpart words. This can be confusing for French or Italian speakers who, if they began speaking in those languages could quite possibly be greeted with only German replies.
Getting Around The town of Dübendorf is quite small, and it is easy to get around on foot. Traversal from one side of the city to the other can be done within a half hour of casual walking. The site map.search.ch has bus/train/tram information on every image. The site places emblems over every station, and placing the mouse over the emblem will show all lines connecting to that station (and will even give their destinations and next few departure times). In addition to its mostly German-language website, The Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (All public transportation companies of the Canton of Zürich) maintains an English speaking section to their site with train and ticket information as well as maps.
Airport To get from the airport to Dübendorf's center directly, you can take the number 759 bus which leaves the airport directly across the street from baggage claim, and delivers you directly to the shopping center in front of the Coop market, or (further) to the Dübendorf Bahnhof. The cost will be about 3-4 Fr, and the trip will take roughly 20-30 minutes. Alternatively, you can take trains and trams which connect through Zürich's main train station, covering a larger distance but completing the journey in more or less the same time. |
