Encyclopedia > Dubingiai massacre

Dubingiai massacre was a mass murder of up to 27 Lithuanians in the town of Dubingiai during World War II. On 23 June 1944, the local Armia Krajowa unit commanded by Zygmunt Szendzielarz aka "Łupaszko" entered the town and murdered a number of Lithuanians in a retaliation for an earlier massacre of Polish villagers in Glitiškės done by Lithuanian police. Polish partisans were selective in targeting their victims and they did not kill Lithuanian men married to Polish women. [1] The number of Lithuanian victims is estimated at 20 to 27. It should be noted that the action was not limited to Dubingiai only and that also other Polish units were involved. [4] According to Lithuanian sources [5] [6] [7] 70-100 Lithuanians, including many civilians, were killed in total by the end of June 1944, not only in Dubingiai but also in the neighbouring villages of Joniškis, Inturkė, Bijutiškis, and Giedraičiai. Some of these numbers have been confirmed by Polish historians. [8] Giedraičiai, Polish: is a Lithuanian noble family, most probably rooting up to Mindaugas times, although has no connections with him. ...
