Encyclopedia > Ducted fan

A ducted fan is an arrangement of a propeller-driven aircraft where the propeller is mounted inside the fuselage, within a duct. The term "ducted fan" is sometimes also used to refer to an aircraft powered by such an installation. By limiting the amount of air affected by the propeller to that which is in front of it, the ducted fan is more efficient than a conventional propeller of equivalent size. Ducted fans are favored in VTOL and other low-speed designs for their high thrust-to-weight ratio. An additional advantage is due to the fact that a ring airfoil is vastly more efficient than a conventional wing. A ducted fan is also quieter than a normal prop. A propeller can be seen as a rotating fin in water or a wing in air. ... An aircraft is any machine capable of atmospheric flight. ... Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) describes airplanes that can lift off vertically. ... Thrust-to-weight ratio (where weight means weight at the Earths surface) is a dimensionless parameter characteristic of rocket and jet engines, and of vehicles propelled by such engines (typically space launch vehicles and jet aircraft). ...

The turbofans found in modern jets are a highly-refined and developed variation on both the ducted fan and ancestor jet-engine. Turbofan engines are found in both military and commercial aircraft, with each application dictating the engine's internal parameters and performance characteristics. CFM56-3 turbofan, lower half, side view. ...

Among model-airplane hobbyists, the ducted fan is popular with builders of high-performance radio controlled model aircraft. Internal-combustion glow-engines combined with ducted-fan units were the first achievable means of modeling a scaled-size jet aircraft. Despite the introduction of model-scale (miniature jet engine) turbines, ducted fans remain popular today as they are more affordable, and because ducted fans are compatible with emerging electric-powered flight systems. This remote control airplane is carrying a scale model of X-33 and is taking part in actual NASA research. ... Aircraft modeling or aeromodelling is a hobby that has been popular since the 1930s. ... Jet aircraft are aircraft with jet engines. ... A Pratt and Whitney turbofan engine for the F-15 Eagle is tested at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, USA. The tunnel behind the engine muffles noise and allows exhaust to escape. ...

Ducted fan installations in full-size aircraft are much rarer but not unknown. Examples include the Bell X-22, Vertol VZ-2 and the Edgley Optica. Many hovercraft are also powered by ducted fans. The Bell X-22 was an experimental VTOL/STOL aircraft evalutated by the US Navy. ... A U.S. Navy hovercraft attached to the Amphibious assault ship Kearsarge (LHD-3) A hovercraft is a vehicle that is supported on a cushion of air. ...
