Encyclopedia > Dudley Ward Tunnel

The Dudley Ward Tunnel is a road tunnel through the south-eastern part of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is named after Sir Alfred Dudley Ward, Governor of Gibraltar from 8 June 1962 to 5 August 1965. The tunnel links the eastern side of the Rock, including Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay, via the Sir Herbert Miles Road, with Europa Point, at the southern tip of Gibraltar. Following a rockfall on 18 February 2002, which killed a man, the Government concluded that the risk of further such incidents was too great, and the tunnel was closed indefinitely. DudleyMall - Dudley Castle - Brief History (1966 words)
The Suttons took on Dudley as an additional surname, and as it was common for those who worked for the local lord to use his name for themselves, the spread of Dudley as a surname commences from this period.
John Dudley (another member of the family who was keen to have the castle himself) connived to assist his downfall and had succeeded by the 1530s.
While the town of Dudley may not have staunchly espoused one side or the other, the new Earl had given King Charles I considerable support and the castle itself was held by royalists.
