The use of pistols became more popular, and by 1770 gun makers in Europe were producing custom sets of pistols designed exclusively for duelling.
Duelling was, after all, conducted with exquisite politeness, according to a code that was honorable and fair.
In order to discourage duelling among his officers "Fredric the Great" built a gallows on the field of honor to hang the survivor.

Single shot duelling pistols and their later derivatives as percussion target pistols are generally to be found in good condition as they saw limited use.
Duelling pistols - and to a lesser degree target pistols - followed a uniform pattern, but other types of pistols are similar to the inexperienced eye yet inferior for modern target work.
Pistols of very high quality and retaining much original finish will be needlessly expensive for shooting whereas minor damage or missing parts reduce the collector's value and can make a cheap shooter even after the restoration work is paid for.
