Duke Zhuang of Chang (757 BC701 BC) was the leader in the State of Chang. His name was Wusheng, which means "a difficult birth." In 743 BC, he became the duke of Chang, and later defeated his brother Gongshu Duan, who led a rebellion against him. He was appointed Left Advisor by King Ping of Zhou. After King Ping's death, the following king (King Huan) recalled him off official. In return for this, Duke Zhuang refused to go to the capital and meet King Huan. King Huan made a war against him. In this war he defeated the army of the king and hurt King Huan on the shoulder. These changes are, of course, fully consonant with the simultaneous militiarization of Luo Yue society and occur for many of the same reasons, though the closer proximity of the Xi Ou to the military labor markets of Chu make the process far more obvious among them.
Later Zhuang names are sometimes compounded of two patronymics, suggesting that the Zhuang early used the equivalent of hyphenating the clan names of fathers and mothers, producing a name such as Huang-Nong to indicate both maternal and paternal lines.
The Zhuang were particularly noted for the excellence of their crossbow forces, often firing deadly poisoned arrows, and for their highly disciplined squads of javelin throwers---specialized units no doubt familiar to their Yue precursors as well.
