The human captain—who was considered by his crew to be a 'loose cannon'—panicked and opened fire on the Minbari ships. This attack resulted in the death of Dukhat. This caused the Minbari to declare a holy war against the humans that resulted in about 250,000 human deaths. Furthermore, it would have concluded with the extermination of humanity until the Battle of the Line when a stunning discovery prompted the Minbari to surrender.
