The Minbari ships approached the Earth Alliance ships with their gun ports open in a sign of respect. Dukhat, realizing the humans would misinterpret this as hostility, ordered the gunports closed, but it was too late. The human captain—who was considered by his crew to be a 'loose cannon'—panicked and opened fire on the Minbari ships. This attack resulted in the death of Dukhat. This caused the Minbari to declare a holy war against the humans that resulted in about 250,000 human deaths.
