Duluth is a city located in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and is a suburb of Atlanta located in the Metro Atlanta area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,122.


Duluth is a popular and rapidly developing suburb of Atlanta, falling close to Interstate 85, which allows a quick commute to Atlanta. It has schools at all levels up through high school and is home to Gwinnett Place Mall, a central commercial center of the northeast Metro Atlanta area. Nearby attractions include Stone Mountain, Lake Lanier, and the attractions of Atlanta such as the Fox Theater and The Omni. Its Peachtree Industrial Boulevard is the same road as Atlanta's Peachtree Road and Peachtree Street.


A professional sports franchise play in Duluth—the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL, a hockey minor league. Both play in the Arena at Gwinnett Center, which opened in 2003. In the TPC at Sugarloaf golf course, the Bellsouth Classic tournament is played just before The Masters.


Duluth has an annual Fall Festival celebrating the season of autumn, now held in their newly-built town center, where several buildings of traditional architecture are located, along with a pavilion, a fountain, and City Hall.

Geography

Duluth is located at 34°0'11" North, 84°8'44" West (34.003100, -84.145498)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.1 km² (8.9 mi²). 22.8 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.


History

Duluth is an old city, with its origins stretching back to the early 1800's, when it was primarily forest land. Initially only Cherokee Indians lived in the area, but with the creation of Gwinnett County, Georgia it was opened to white settlers.


The shared names between Duluth, Georgia and the more well-known Duluth, Minnesota are no coincidence. Originally called Howell Crossing after one of its founders Evan Howell, the town was renamed when it became the southern endpoint for a critical railroad whose northern endpoint lay in Minnesota's Duluth, which in turn is named for Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,122 people, 8,735 households, and 5,642 families residing in the city. The population density is 969.5/km² (2,512.3/mi²). There are 9,061 housing units at an average density of 397.1/km² (1,029.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.65% White, 11.86% African American, 0.33% Native American, 12.89% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.83% from other races, and 2.41% from two or more races. 9.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,735 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 27.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 41.8% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $60,088, and the median income for a family is $69,437. Males have a median income of $46,683 versus $34,334 for females. The per capita income for the city is $29,185. 4.4% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
