Their greatest ever player was Edgar Kail, who scored over 400 goals for the club. An amateur footballer, he won three full caps for the England team against France, Belgium and Spain in 1929, and shunned 'big money' moves to professional clubs to play for his beloved Dulwich Hamlet. At that time, they had attracted crowds of up to 20,000 - though now they have around 2500 supporters on match day. Dickson and defender Lewis Tozer joined Dulwich around the same time from Erith & Belvedere in the summer of 2006 and both had successful seasons, with Tozer winning Managers Player of the Yaer Award and Players Player of the Year Award for Season 2006/2007. In the same season, Dulwich signed many respectable Non-League Players including ex-Millwall Keeper Simon Overland, Ex-Nottingham Forest and Stevenage Borough trialist Justyn Roberts and the Colossal Guyanese international Shawn Beveney. It was reported on the May 5, 2007 that midfielder Kenny Beaney was on trial with Portsmouth FC and this was confirmed after he made appearances for their reserves against Tottenham and Arsenal, after playing against the likes of Estonian International Mart Poom, Czech Republic Under-19 Striker Tomas Pekhart and Premiership Goalkeeper Ben Alnwick. Season 2006/2007
After a fantastic finish to the season before, mainly due to new manager Wayne Burnett, Dulwich busied themselves with several signings. These included the captures of Ex-Beckenham dynamo Cedric Meeko, Former Tooting & Mitcham United midfielder Dan Nwanze, Ex-Swindon Playmaker Jamie Cheeseman and Ex-Fulham Goal Machine Luke Cornwall. Other youngsters joined the ranks such as full back Matt Dean and young winger Theo Fairweather-Johnson, despite the shock release of Joel Greaves and the loss of Goma Lambu to Woking FC. However, despite a good pre-season Dulwich did not carry this form into the league and only won one of their first three games, even though Dickson had notched up three goals in three games, already showing the class that would later take him to Charlton. This first win came against Sussex outfit Horsham YMCA, due to a Chris Dickson penalty, after a Phil Williams shot was handled on the line. This marked the start of a better string of results for Dulwich despite some disappointments. It was their goalscoring capabilities and outscore the opposition attitude which turned in many three points for the Hamlet. Such were their goalscoring exploits that Dulwich notched up 11 goals in 2 league games. Unfortunately a game or two on came the crushing 6-7 loss (AET) to Tooting at Champion Hill in the FA Trophy, despite goals from Phil Williams, Chris Dickson, Sol Pinnock (2) and Daniel Jones (2), Dulwich's flowing football could not withstand Tooting's ruthless onslaught for 120 mins. Tozer and Nwanze, the makeshift centre half, struggled to deal with 3 of the best strikers in Ryman South League (Jason Pinnock, Henry Darko and Paul Vines). Despite this gutting defeat, Whyteleafe were the next side to feel the fast paced, free scoring Dulwich attack, and they were slaughtered 5-0 at Champion Hill, Luke Cornwall partnered Dickson up front and this proved to be lethal. The Whyteleafe defence was torn apart as Cornwall, Dickson (2), Sol Pinnock and full back Nic Plumain fired the ball past Whyteleafe 'kepper Danny Coote. Shawn Beveney one of the key figures in the season made his debut for the team as a 73rd minute sub for Kenny Beaney. However, it was the next game that would prove to be one of the most exciting in DHFC history, when Dulwich travelled to Kingsmeadow to face AFC Wimbledon in the London Senior Cup. On a cold, crisp evening, Dulwich went down 2-0 within 19 minutes, with ex-Dulwich transfer target Wayne Finnie grabbing the first, after Northern Ireland under 20 international winger Robin Shroot, began to cause Lewis Tozer and Jason Turley serious problems down the left flank. Soon after that Shroot hit the bar after storming down the left flank, cutting back inside and sending a swinging shot over the head of Lewington and crashing it onto the woodwork. Tozer himself came close after connecting to a cross from the right, only to squander it by rolling it wide. However, unsurprsingly it was Dickson that came to the rescue again, this time partnering Beveney up front, and he poked the ball past the outcoming Paul Smith, after a Beveney flick on. But it was still Shroot who caused the Dulwich defence several problems, having one controversial chance after colliding into the young Lewington. On the game went, and it was Phil Williams who seemed to be wreaking havoc amongest the Dons defence, the flamboyant winger crafting most of Dulwich's chances. And it was due to Williams magic in the 40th minute, that drew a clumsy foul from a Dons defender and allowed Beaney to curl his sweet free-kick over the wall and into the top left corner of the the net. Eniola Oluwa, the tricky left midfielder, also caused problems down the flanks, and his raw pace had the better of the right-back. Despite the lethal wingers Oluwa and Williams, Dulwich went in with a fair score of 2-2 at half time. However, it was the next 5 mins of the second half that would be quite stunning for the minority of DHFC supporters, as Dickson produced perhaps one of the most spectacular goals ever seen in 8 years of Dulwich football. A high ball was lumped forward in the 47th minute, which Beveney dummied, that led to Williams deflecting a Wimbledon thump into the path of Dickson, who jumped, controlled the ball with his chest, brought it down, out ran the full back and out of nowhere produced a screaming strike into the top left corner. From there on Dulwich had an even amount of chances with Wimbledon, with centre back Justyn Roberts charging down the right only to hit his shot wide of the post. Shroot carried on with his eye catching display, and his constant bombardment of crosses were dealt with by the Dulwich centre halves, Roberts and Tozer. Stanley Muguo made his DHFC debut after some solid performances in the reserves and was fantastic in dealing with the long lumps forward that AFC Wimbledon had resorted to, winning almost evry aerial ball going in the last 3 mins that he played of the match. The final whistle blew and Dulwich supporters went home happy after an unexpected victory over Non-league Giants and a stunning goal to suit a good game. Dulwich continued to the next stage of the London Senior Cup. Tooting & Mitcham United Football Club are an association football club representing the London areas of Tooting and Mitcham. ...
