Upon graduating, Oughton was selected 10th overall in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew. Duncan immediately found playing time with the Crew, playing 20 games as a rookie, 12 of which he started. He has maintained a starting role for the Crew for the past three years, and is particularly useful because of his ability to play numerous positions in the midfield and defence. Oughton has played 91 total games for the team in the last four years, registering two goals and six assists. He missed the entire 2005 season with a knee injury and was released in May 2006. However, he continued to train with the team, and on 18 August 2006 the team waived Leonard Bisaku and re-signed Oughton. This turned out to be a huge mistake and reflected poorly upon his management team who failed to fully explore the possibilites avilable to Oughton at the new A-League franchise, Wellington Phoenix, where Oughton would have furthered his international ambitions much more effectively.
