Dundy County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 2,292. Its county seat is Benkelman6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,385 km˛ (921 mi˛). 2,382 km˛ (920 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,292 people, 961 households, and 637 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). There are 1,196 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.95% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 3.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 961 households out of which 27.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 3.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 30.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.87.


In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 22.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,010, and the median income for a family is $35,862. Males have a median income of $22,415 versus $18,583 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,786. 13.60% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.10% of those under the age of 18 and 15.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
