Dunfermline East is a plurality voting system constituency represented in the Scottish Parliament since 1999 and is part of the Mid Scotland and Fife electoral region for the additional member system (AMS). It was created in 1999 with the same boundaries as the Dunfermline East constituency of the House of Commons. The name of the constituency is somewhat of a misnomer, as no part of Dunfermline is actually located with the boundaries. Instead, Cowdenbeath is the largest town and most of the seat's area was once part of the Fife coalfield, on the north bank of the Firth of Forth. The region has economic troubles, and the closure of the Rosyth naval base and the troubles at the naval dockyard have not helped. Statistically, this is one of Labour’s safest seats in Scotland. There has been a Labour MP for this area since 1950. Gordon Brown, the chancellor, has been the MP since 1983 and his majority at the last general election was over 15,000.
