The Dunsink Observatory is an astronomical observatory established in approximately 1785 near the city of Dublin, Ireland. In ancient Greece and other early civilizations, astronomy consisted largely of astrometry, measuring positions of stars and planets in the sky. ... Dublin (Irish: Baile Átha Cliath1),is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Ireland, located2 near the midpoint of Irelands east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin region3. ...

Its most famous director was William Rowan Hamilton, who, amongst other things, discovered quaternions, the first non-commutative algebra, while strolling from the observatory into the centre of the city with some his wife. He is also renowned for his Hamiltonian formulation of dynamics. In the late 20th century, the city encroached ever more on the observatory, which compromised the seeing. The telescope then, no longer state of the art, was used mainly for public 'open nights'. 1985 – Dunsink Observatory (120 words)
Dunsink Observatory, buit in 1783–85 on a hill 8 km northwest of Dublin city centre, prides itself on being the oldest scientific institution in Ireland.
The Dunsink refractor has a French lens by Cauchoix, donated to Trinity College Dublin by Sir James South in 1863, on a mounting by the master telescope maker Thomas Grubb of Dublin.
Dunsink Observatory now houses the astronomy section of the School of Cosmic Physics in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
A Short History of Armagh Observatory (10348 words)
The new observatory was the second to be established in Ireland; (the first was Dunsink Observatory near Dublin).
Unlike the dome of the King's Observatory, Kew (1768), which is insubstantial and appears almost as an afterthought, the domes at Dunsink and Armagh dominate the structure and form the central theme of the building.
However, the Observatory, as a research institution, was not equipped for this influx and in 1964 it was agreed that a Planetarium should be built in Armagh which would cater for public education in astronomy.
