Encyclopedia > Dupuyer Creek

Dupuyer Creek is a tributary of Birch Creek in northwestern Montana in the United States.


It rises in the Lewis and Clark National Forest at the continental divide in northwestern Teton County and flows northwest down from the mountains, past Dupuyer, and joins Birch Creek in Pondera County 2 mi (3.2 km) west of Valier.

Dupuyer was named after Dupuyer Creek, which came from the French word depouilles, which trappers and explorers used to describe the back fat of a buffalo, a delicacy esteemed by both Indian and white man.

Conrad is approximately 35 miles east of the Birch Creek Ranch and is situated in the heart of the Golden Triangle, referred to as Montana's breadbasket.
