Durham is a census-designated place located in Butte County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,220.


Geography

Durham is located at 39°38'24" North, 121°47'52" West (39.640086, -121.797797)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 212.2 km˛ (81.9 mi˛). 211.9 km˛ (81.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,220 people, 1,914 households, and 1,466 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 24.6/km˛ (63.8/mi˛). There are 1,986 housing units at an average density of 9.4/km˛ (24.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 92.18% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 3.58% from other races, and 2.59% from two or more races. 8.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,914 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.0 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $53,306, and the median income for a family is $61,373. Males have a median income of $42,568 versus $27,885 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $26,361. 6.1% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
