 The Canine unit was first started in the late 1980's to early 1990's with its first K-9 handler being Constable VanderDruim. he was closely followed by Constable Dave Mounsteven. Cst. Mounsteven got his first dog "Ice" in the early to mid 1990's. "Ice" was retired from service because he didn't like loud noises, a problem around Police and their guns. He then received "Chase" who just recently retired from service due to old age. "Chase" had a documentary aired about him named "Chase K-9 hero". When "Chase" retired a new police service dog came into action, another German Shepard name "Kane", "Kane" was the name of the very first dog donated to the DRPS.
