Durrus is a Washed Rind Cows Milk Cheese. It is made in Ireland by Jeffa Gill. She began making Durrus in her kitchen in 1979, and it is still made by traditional methods. This cheese is produced in the valley of Coomkeen, on the Sheep's Head Pennisula in the southwest corner of Ireland. Local herds provide the raw milk needed to make durrus. Durrus has won many awards from competitions such as the IFEX International Cheese Awards, the World Cheese Awards, the British Cheese Awards. Durrus is a round, semi-soft cheese. It has a pale interior wiht a pinkish, yellow-gray rind. It is aged for 3 to 5 weeks to allow the flavor to mature. It has a mild and creamy taste when young, and a stronger and fruitier flavor as it ages. It has a mild to strong odor, depending on age. It should be served at room temperature, and is best with fruit such as pears, toast and as part of a fondue.
Durrus is an Irish Village located in West Cork, six miles from Bantry.
The village is the location of Cool na Long castle, built by the McCarthy (Muclagh) family, and which is now in a ruined state, despite efforts to have it taken into state charge by the late antiquarian Paddy O'Keeffe.
Durrus is located at the head of the Sheep's Head and Mizen Head Peninsulas.
