The Dutch Wikipedia is a Dutch edition of Wikipedia. Started on 19 June 2001, this edition reached 100,000 articles on 14 October 2005. It shortly surpassed the Polish Wikipedia as the sixth largest edition of Wikipedia, but since then it fell back to the eighth position. On 24 January 2006, the 125,000th article was added. On 1 March 2006 it overtook the Swedish and Italian editions in one day to rise back to the sixth position. On 19 March 2006 the 150,000th article was added. Dutch is spoken as a mother tongue by about 60% of the population in Suriname, most of them being bilingual with Sranan Tongo and other ethnic languages (2005, Nederlandse Taalunie: [2], in Dutch).
Dutch does have a relatively close genetic relationship to the descendants of Middle English (such as Modern English and Scots), since both belong to the West Germanic language family and both lack most or all of the High German consonant shift that characterizes the descendants of Middle High German (such as Modern German and Yiddish).
