Encyclopedia > Dymchurch

Dymchurch lies on the Kent coast, south of Hythe and on the Romney Marsh. It is typical of this part of the coast, having originally been a very small village which, during the 1930s, became a much larger settlement. Many of the "houses" were converted railway carriages. Today it has completely changed.

  • The beach itself is made up of sand and small pebbles - watch out for the river outfall pipe. There are two expensive pay and display car parks right on the seafront (spot the Martello tower or the toilets and that's a car park), stinking toilets, ice cream kiosks, a promenade, amusement arcade, shops which close in winter ... and that's about all.
  • The local traders, like elsewhere, put on a false welcome simply wanting your money, while the local residents are often openly hostile and dislike holidaymakers invading their privacy.
  • Dymchurch holiday accommodation and places to stay including bed and breakfast (B&B), cottages, guest houses, hotels, chalets, holiday lets, flats & apartments, camping sites & caravan parks.
  • Dymchurch is the second station along the 23km line of the smallest public railway in the world - the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. The line runs from the Cinque Port of Hythe following the coastline to Dungeness (the end of the world as some describe the place). Once upon a time the journey was a pleasant trip across open marshland but nowadays, the overpriced ticket buys a journey hemmed in by back garden fences built to obliterate a view into the homes of the many recent constructions which have sprung up from nowhere. The perpetual whistling of the engines disturbs the peace, there is nothing to be seen of any interest and, considering the short distance of the line, the railway has a death toll at level crossings way above the national average.

However, property prices are expected to fall drastically during the coming years. This is due to the fact that the London Airport Authority is planning to upgrade the aerodrome at Lydd into an international airport with an annual capacity of over 2 million passengers. The flight paths will cross directly over Dymchurch. There will also be night flights. The aerodrome has already been renamed "London-Ashford" Airport. The local housing committees are planning for a massive influx of immigrant labour to fill the thousands of unskilled job vacancies which will be created for the construction and operation of the airport, the opening of a motorway link with the M20, and plans are being drawn up to provide the airport with a rail connection.
