Encyclopedia > Dynamic stability control

Dyanmic Stability Control is another name for Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) works by using information from many vehicle sensors such as Yaw rate, Acceleration, Steering Angle and Wheel speed Sensors. With this infomrmation, the the ESC system constantly compares the driver’s intention with the vehicle’s actual behavior. A central microcomputer analyzes the incoming data. When instability is detected, ESC immediately triggers a response to provide stability, automatically braking any of the four wheels and/or adjusting engine torque.

A revolutionary active safety technology, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), serves as a vehicle's sixth sense by anticipating crashes before they occur and automatically intervening to prevent them.

ESC provides enhanced stability and control in all driving situations, significantly reducing the risk of a crash, especially on...

twisting, country roads or highway ramps rainy, city streets sand or gravel hot, dry pavement snow, sleet and ice and during...

obstacle avoidance maneuvers cornerning accelerating braking ESC helps to prevent rollovers, skids, spins, and can keep your vehicle on the road.

BMW World - Technology (673 words)
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is a suspension control system which goes beyond the single components of Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Automatic Stability Control + Traction (ASC + T).
DSC then intervenes via the engine management system, reducing drive torque and activating wheel brakes when necessary to keep the vehicle stable.
DSC is, in fact, a further development of the ABS and ASC+T slip control systems.
Howstuffworks "Stability Control" (446 words)
A stability control system uses several sensors to detect a loss of traction in your vehicle, then works with the antilock brake system to apply individual brakes to help keep the vehicle on its intended path.
Stability control pulsates the brakes of individual wheels to help "rotate" the vehicle to the driver's intended path.
Stability control is an important safety feature on today's vehicles, so make sure the vehicle you are considering has it.
