Encyclopedia > Dyveke Sigbritsdatter

Dyveke Sigbritsdatter (in Denmark normally just known as "Dyveke" - Dutch for "little pidgeon") was a common girl, the daughter of merchant Sigbrit Willoms, who became the mistress to Christian II of Denmark in 1507 or 1509. Their relationship has been the inspiration of many poets but in fact very little is known about it. However, Christian married a very young woman of royalty, which broke Dyvekes' heart. She never recovered and died in the summer of 1517 from eating poisioned cherries, prepeared for her by her mother. This death led to the execution of the nobleman Torben Oxe, however his guilt has never been proven and both an initiative by the court of the Emperor Maximilian I or even an incidental poisoning have been suggested as an explanation. Her mother Sigbrit was burnt at the stake in Begren the same year, after pleading guilty of poisioning her own daughter to releave her from her pain and. Another peculiarity, more fatal to him in that aristocratic age than any other, was his fondness for the common people, which was increased by his passion for a pretty Norwegian girl of Dutch heritage, named Dyveke Sigbritsdatter, who became his mistress in 1507 or 1509.
But he would not give up his liaison with Dyveke, and it was only the death of the unfortunate girl in 1517, under suspicious circumstances, that prevented serious complications with the emperor Charles V.
The king’s almost “Shakespearean” life and career – both the Dyveke affair, his acts concerning the Bloodbath, his behavior at the time of his downfall 1523 and his obscure existence as “the prisoner of Soenderborg” has created many myths.
