It replaced the E46 sedan and touring models during 2005. The E90 is larger than its predecessor on all dimensions, and for the first time since the E21, the volume model 320i uses an I4 engine. The current 3 series coupé, M3 and cabriolet variants are still based upon the E46. Future variants
It has been announced that the two door coupé model will be available in September 2006. The most powerful model will be using the new 300 hp twin turbo inline six engine. The base models of the new 3 series coupe will be the 328i and the 328xi while the top of the range model will be the twin-turbo 335i. The 328xi will be the first coupe in BMW history to have xDrive. The 328i and xi models will have a 230 horsepower engine that will also produce 200 ft·lbf of torque. Even the base 328i will out accelerate the old 330Ci E46. An M3 version is said to be in final design stages, utilising a 4.0 L V8 engine rated at 415 bhp. The 330 M sport sedan "borrows" many features from the M branded range of accessories including M wheels, door trim and steering wheel. All of these can be purchased (at the build stage) as a pack for a one off price that also includes sports seats, anthracite head-lining, sports suspension (15 mm lower than non-sports), and an enhanced front grill. It can be hard to spot from a conventional 330 sedan, but lowered front and rear air dams provide a more aggressive look. BMW will reportedly produce a metal-topped coupé convertible model of the E90 rather than the traditional cloth-top convertible. This model will be introduced in 2007. The coupé convertible (in French coupé cabriolet) or retractable hardtop (more common US usage) is an evolution of car body style that involves the flexibility of a mobile roof (from the convertible) and of the rigid roof of a coupé. In the first years of the 2000s, car manufacturers started...
