An EMD GP20 is a 4-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between November 1959 and April 1962. EMD GP20 History (1399 words)
The EMD GP20 model was born out of the necessity by EMD to get greater horsepower out of a diesel locomotive.
Even though EMD was reluctant to incur the possible maintenance headaches of the turbochargers on 4 axle units (because the increase in horsepower was not that great over the current GP9 model) they began production of the GP20 model in November of 1959.
EMD was even offering trade in allowances for older units towards the cost of the new GP20s as an incentive for sales.
The EMD GP20 (760 words)
The GP20 was one of EMD’s first to feature the standard cab, a design that would become, well, virtually standard on diesels for the next 30+ years (until the FRA mandated that the wide cab design be employed on every new locomotive in the 1990s for added safety).
While the GP20 was not as successful as its later sisters like the GP30, GP40, GP40-2, and SD40 and SD40-2, it nevertheless had decent sales for only being in the catalog for three years and cranked out a total of 260 units.
Perhaps the key visual differences between the GP20 and its later sister the GP30 was the latter’s distinctive bulge over the cab where the dynamic braking was housed and a solid front windshield as opposed to a split version on the GP30.
