The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is a standardization organization of the telecommunications industry (equipment makers and network operators) in Europe, with worldwide projection. ETSI has been successful in standardizing the GSM cell phone system.


Significant ETSI standardisation bodies are 3GPP (for UMTS networks) or TISPAN (for fixed networks and Internet convergence).


ETSI was created by CEPT in 1988.

ETSI was created by CEPT in 1988 and is officially recognized by the European Commission and the EFTA secretariat.
ETSI has 699 members from 55 countries inside and outside Europe, including manufacturers, network operators, administrations, service providers, research bodies and users — in fact, all the key players in the ICT arena.

ETSI AT (Access and Terminals) dealing with analogue presented wired interfaces of Telecommunications Networks, the digital presented wired interfaces of Telecommunications Networks, the interfaces based on new technologies as far as they are relevant for telecommunications terminals and performance, features and functions supporting Telecommunications services implemented on terminals.
ETSI ERM (Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters) has the primary responsibility for ETSI deliverables (in whole or in part) dealing with EMC and radio spectrum matters concerned with inter-system characteristics and to co-ordinate the ETSI positions on the radio spectrum and spectrum allocations.
ETSI TM (Transmission and Multiplexing) is responsible for all aspects of standardization of transport networks and their elements (including fixed radio systems, excluding satellite systems), and for transmission aspects of transport network interfaces.
