Eagle Butte is a city located in South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 619.


Geography

Eagle Butte is located at 44°59'47" North, 101°14'9" West (44.996502, -101.235875)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 619 people, 227 households, and 140 families residing in the city. The population density is 259.8/km² (675.4/mi²). There are 262 housing units at an average density of 110.0/km² (285.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 18.26% White, 0.00% African American, 80.29% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 227 households out of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.1% are married couples living together, 26.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.49.


In the city the population is spread out with 38.8% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 14.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $18,611, and the median income for a family is $20,313. Males have a median income of $23,125 versus $24,167 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,192. 47.9% of the population and 41.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 58.9% of those under the age of 18 and 21.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
