According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.8 km² (39.3 mi²). 96.3 km² (37.2 mi²) of it is land and 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it (5.42%) is water. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 815 people, 330 households, and 203 families residing in the town. The population density was 8.5/km² (21.9/mi²). There were 599 housing units at an average density of 6.2/km² (16.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.65% White, 0.12% Native American, 0.74% Asian, and 0.49% from two or more races. Eagle Lake is a town in Aroostook County first organized for election purposes on July 11, 1859 from the township T16 R7.
Maine Route 11 serves the town as it moves from Fort Kent, though Eagle Lake and south through the western portion of Aroostook County.
Eagle Lake Public Reserved Land, in nearby T16 R6 and T16 R 5 WELS, is a 23,000-acre area including most of Eagle Lake.

Because all of the surface waters within the District's limits flow into Eagle Lake, a valuable recreational resource, it was decided that some form of land treatment would be required.
In 1979, Carroll E. Taylor and Associates, Consulting Engineers of Auburn, Maine, and their sub consultants, completed an in-depth land treatment study which concluded that soils in Eagle Lake were not suitable for conventional land treatment, therefore, a unique system of land treatment cells and collection ditches was developed.
In 1980 the District requested that the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection classify this system as "innovative" by EPA regulations and therefore eligible for 100% state and federal funding.
