Summary

Battle of the Planets casts five young people as G-Force, consisting of Mark, Jason, Princess, Keyop, and Tiny. G-Force protects Earth from planet Spectra and other attacks from 'beyond space'. Their main ship is called The Phoenix, which can separate into five small ships, each operated by one team member. A regularly featured Deus ex machina was the transformation of The Phoenix into a flaming bird-shaped craft able to handle virtually any exceptional situation by functioning something like a large blowtorch. Deus ex machina (plural dei ex machinis) is Latin for god from the machine and is a calque from the Greek από μηχανής θεός, (pronounced apo mekhanes theos). It originated with Greek and Roman theater, when a mechane would lower a god or gods onstage to resolve a hopeless situation. ...

Subsequent versions

Decades after the original release, this series continues to bring in new fans. Subsequent seasons (Gatchaman II and Gatchaman F) were released as the Saban-produced show Eagle Riders. Only 13 episodes of this series were aired in the United States, although all 65 episodes were seen in Australia.

In 1986, Gatchaman was re-worked in the US as G-Force: Guardians of Space from Turner, with a good deal of the original content that had been edited out of Battle of the Planets put back in to the show. It followed the plot of the original Gatchaman much more faithfully than Battle of the Planets because of this. However, the lack of Hoyt Curtin's original score and inferior voice acting prevented this series from attaining the high praise given to Battle of the Planets.

Originally released in comic book form by Gold Key, Battle of the Planets was revamped by the comic book company Top Cow. Two soundtracks and several DVDs have also been released. A comic book is a magazine or book containing the art form of comics. ...

The movie rights to Gatchaman were recently picked up by Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Jerry Bruckheimer Jerome Bruckheimer (born September 21, 1945) is an American film and television producer. ...

Key changes in the adaptation

The Battle of the Planets adaptation differs significantly from Gatchaman. The difference is due to heavy editing made to make the show appealing to the US juvenile television market by removing objectional elements and adding elements reminiscent of the film Star Wars, which was popular at the time. While the original Gatchaman was earthbound, dark-toned environmentally-themed, the adaptation morphed it into a child-friendly outer space show with lovable robot characters. Setting, violence, objectional language, and character fatalities were altered or eliminated by cutting scenes, dubbing, and explanatory voiceovers. In the adaptation, the saucy-mouthed Junpei lost his habit of swearing and picked up a bizarre verbal tic to mask the difference in the mouth movements. To compensate for the other differences, an R2-D2 type robot named 7-Zark-7 performed explanatory voiceovers and padded the time lost from editing. Additionally, 7-Zark-7 and other added robotic characters added juvenile appeal to the show. The show was a favourite with the juvenile audiences of the time, but some fans of the original contend that the resulting Battle of the Planets is a wholly different show than Gatchaman. In spite of the alterations, the plot and character development of the adaptation generally matches the original. Categories: Stub ... Beta Readers - Ollie, G-Force - Meridian Day (2338 words)
Eagle Riders has changed the personalities of the family members so that they are less of a negative influence on Ollie.
Eagle Riders isn't unique in this - BOTP also changed their relationship so that they were actually old friends of Tiny rather than his relatives, and their personalities changed accordingly to be more appreciative of him.
Given that this is Eagle Riders, the Gatchaverse where if someone isn't Bad then they *must* be Good, it's unlikely that they see themselves as purposefully picking fights or causing trouble, or that there has been violence within the family.
