The Duke of Roxburghe (pronounced "Roxbruh") is a title in the peerage of Scotland created in 1707 along with the titles Viscount Broxmouth, Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford and Earl of Kelso. John Ker, 5th Earl of Roxburghe became the first holder of these titles.
The Duke has the subsidiary titles of: Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford (created 1707), Earl of Roxburghe (1616), Earl of Kelso (1707), Earl Ker (1722), Earl Innes (1837), Viscount Broxmouth (1707), Lord Roxburghe (1600), Lord Ker of Cessford and Cavertoun (1616) and Baron Ker of Wakefield (1722). Most of the titles form part of the peerage of Scotland, but the Earldom of Ker and the Barony of Ker of Wakefield belong to the peerage of Great Britain, and the Earldom of Innes to the United Kingdom peerage. The Duke's eldest son bears the courtesy title of Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford.
The family has its seat at Floors Castle in Kelso, Scotland.
John was betrothed to Christiana, daughter of the duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; but when the princess's sister Charlotte was affianced to George III., reasons of state led to the rupture of the engagement, and he died unmarried on the 19th of March 1804.
The duke of Roxburghe sits in the House of Lords as EarlInnes, a peerage of the United Kingdom, which was conferred in 1837 upon James Henry, the 6th duke (1816-1879).
