The title Earl Mountbatten of Burma was created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1947 for Louis Mountbatten, 1st Viscount Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy of India. The title is the first in over three centuries to allow descent in the female line. The letters patent creating the title specified the "remainder" allowing the title to descend to heirs male, and in default of such issue to his eldest daughter. Lord Mountbatten of Burma's eldest daughter Patricia succeeded as Countess Mountbatten of Burma upon the former's assassination.
The subsidiary titles of Lady Mountbatten of Burma are: Viscountess Mountbatten of Burma, of Romsey in the County of Southampton (created 1946), and Baroness Romsey, of Romsey in the County of Southampton (1947). Both of these titles, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, have the same special remainder as the Earldom. Lord Romsey is the courtesy title for Lady Mountbatten of Burma's eldest son and heir.
Burma Campaigns (January 1942-August 1945) In 1942 two Japanese divisions advanced into Burma (now MYANMAR), accompanied by the Burma National Army of AUNG SAN, capturing Rangoon, and forcing the British garrison to begin the long evacuation west.
Burma was annexed to India during three wars with the British between 1824 and 1886.

EarlMountbatten of Burma was born H.S.H. Prince Louis Francis of Battenberg on June 25th, 1900, the younger son of Prince Louis of Battenberg and his wife Princess Victoria of Hesse.
As the head of the House of Battenberg, Lord Mounbatten's father adopted the surname of Mountbatten and was raised to the peerage as Marquess of Milford Haven, Earl of Medina and Viscount Alderney.
Lord Mountbatten's connection with Cambridge much predated his being President of C.U.S.G. and later being Patron of C.U.H.&G.S. He matriculated at Christ's College in 1919 and was both admitted to the degree of LL.D. honoris causa and elected an Honorary Fellow of his college in 1946.
