The title of Earl of Kinnoull was created in 1633 in the Peerage of Scotland. Other associated titles are: Viscount Dupplin (created 1627), Lord Hay of Kinfauns (1627) and Baron Hay of Pedwardine (1711). The former two are in the Peerage of Scotland, while the last is in the Peerage of Great Britain. The title of Viscount Dupplin is the courtesy title for the Earl's eldest son and heir.
He continued to advance and was appointed Lord Clerk Register and a lord of session in 1616.
He was Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 16221634, and was created Viscount Dupplin in 1627 and Earl of Kinnoull in 1633.
Towards the end of the 19th century, Balhousie was in a dilapidated state but the 11th Earl of Kinnoull restored and extended it - and then rented the property to others.
