According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,337 km² (516 mi²). 1,324 km² (511 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it (0.98%) is water. Early County is home to several historical attractions including Kolomoki Mounds State Park and Cohelee Creek Bridge, the southern-most covered bridge still standing, and is home to one of the last wooden flagpoles from the Civil War era, located at the historic Courthouse in downtown Blakely. Early County was one of seven counties created on Dec. 15, 1818, by an act of the General Assembly (Ga. Laws 1818, p.
Early, Irwin, Appling counties extended across south Georgia and were created from Creek lands acquired in 1814 by the Treaty of Fort Jackson.
The act further directed that until a courthouse was erected, Early County courts were to meet at the house of Richard Grimsley in the 28th district.
