Encyclopedia > Earthly branch

The Earthly Branches (Chinese: 地支; pinyin: Dìzhī) is an ancient Chinese numeral system now uncommon, except when used in conjunction with the Heavenly Stems in the traditional calendar and Taoism. There are twelve phonetic characters in the system, each corresponding to an animal of the Chinese zodiac and a respective Chinese hour (时辰; pinyin: Shíchen, modern day 2-hours):

2 丑 (Chǒu) Ox 1am-3am
3 寅 (Yín) Tiger 3am-5am
4 卯 (Mǎo) Rabbit 5am-7am
5 辰 (Chén) Dragon 7am-9am
6 巳 (Sì) Snake 9am-11am
7 午 (Wǔ) Horse 11am-1pm
8 未 (Wèi) Sheep 1pm-3pm
9 申 (Shēn) Monkey 3pm-5pm
10 酉 (Yǒu) Rooster 5pm-7pm
11 戌 (Xū) Dog 7pm-9pm

Shang Dynasty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1026 words)
Information about the Shang Dynasty comes from inscriptions on bronze artifacts and oracle bones--turtle shells, cattle scapula or other bones on which were written the first significant corpus of recorded Chinese characters.
The oracle bone inscriptions, which date to the latter half of the dynasty, typically recorded the date in the Sexagenary cycle of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, followed by the name of the diviner and the topic being divined about.
An interpretation of the answer (prognostication) and whether the divination later proved correct (verification) were sometimes also added.
