Easley is a city located in Pickens County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,754.

Easley is located at 34°49'24" North, 82°35'25" West (34.823371, -82.590394)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.6 km˛ (10.6 mi˛). 27.6 km˛ (10.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,754 people, 7,227 households, and 5,058 families residing in the city. The population density is 644.3/km˛ (1,668.8/mi˛). There are 7,932 housing units at an average density of 287.8/km˛ (745.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 85.35% White, 11.81% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 2.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,227 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $38,204, and the median income for a family is $47,867. Males have a median income of $35,399 versus $25,443 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,965. 10.9% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Easley was born in Nash County, North Carolina.
From 1982 to 1990, Easley served as the district attorney for the 13th Judicial District in North Carolina, covering Brunswick, Bladen, and Columbus counties.
Easley is also considered to be a possible candidate for Senate to run against Sen. Elizabeth Dole in 2008 or Sen. Richard Burr in 2010, and, although his name is often mentioned as a potential candidate 2008 presidential election, most political insiders do not expect him to seriously consider a presidential run.

Easley is a lifetime member of the Southport Women's Club, she has served as a Member of the Strategic Planning Committee at North Carolina Central University, she serves on the Board of Directors of Communities in Schools of North Carolina and, in 2003, she was awarded a Triangle Business Journal "Women in Business Award."
