East Canton is a village located in Stark County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,629.


Geography

East Canton is located at 40°47'12" North, 81°17'13" West (40.786708, -81.287080)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.4 km˛ (1.3 mi˛). All of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,629 people, 664 households, and 470 families residing in the village. The population density is 472.9/km˛ (1,228.7/mi˛). There are 696 housing units at an average density of 202.1/km˛ (525.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 94.78% White, 3.87% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.06% Asian American, and 0.80% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 664 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the village the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $40,756, and the median income for a family is $43,796. Males have a median income of $34,286 versus $21,458 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,904. 8.1% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.6% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The original Minerva to East Canton leg was used from about 1913 to about 1940, but as cars became bigger and faster, the width and tight turns of the road became intolerable.
One of the original markers is in East Canton on the south side of Nassau Street one half block west of Cedar Street.
An afternoon exploring the road between East Canton and Minerva is worth the time for the historical minded, but it should be remembered that parts of the road are on private property and should not be trespassed, and starting and stopping on a busy highway such as this could be dangerous.
