East Farmingdale is a census-designated place located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,400.

Geography

East Farmingdale is located at 40°43'30" North, 73°25'34" West (40.725061, -73.426220)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 5,400 people, 1,693 households, and 1,286 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 387.5/km² (1,003.8/mi²). There are 1,723 housing units at an average density of 123.7/km² (320.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 73.33% White, 14.83% African American, 0.15% Native American, 4.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 4.52% from other races, and 2.98% from two or more races. 12.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,693 households out of which 37.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.52.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 34.6% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $68,125, and the median income for a family is $71,726. Males have a median income of $51,332 versus $32,188 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $25,466. 7.0% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
