East Gaffney is a census-designated place located in Cherokee County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,349.

Geography

East Gaffney is located at 35°4'59" North, 81°37'42" West (35.083060, -81.628302)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.32% is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,349 people, 1,380 households, and 916 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 407.9/km² (1,058.0/mi²). There are 1,563 housing units at an average density of 190.4/km² (493.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 77.64% White, 20.39% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 2.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,380 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 18.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 27.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $24,527, and the median income for a family is $32,167. Males have a median income of $26,156 versus $21,009 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $12,902. 22.6% of the population and 16.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.5% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
