East Kilbride is a town in West Central Scotland, about 10 miles south of Glasgow. East Kilbride emerged from a small village of around 900 inhabitants to a busy new town with a population of over 70,000. Twinned with the village of Ballerup in Denmark, the town recently lost out to Stirling in city status by the Queen and prior to that it lost out to Inverness as the Millennium city.

East Kilbride sits on the Calder river and with its huge covered town centre, it holds the title of having the largest indoor shopping centre in Scotland and 10th largest in Europe.

From 1975 East Kilbride lent its name to a local government district in the Strathclyde Region of Scotland. In 1996 administrative functions were taken over by the South Lanarkshire unitary council. (See: Subdivisions of Scotland)
