The A580, East Lancashire Road universally known as the East Lancs Road was built to to provide better access to the Port of Liverpool for East Lancashire and Manchester. Until the building of motorways this was the biggest road projects in the United Kingdom.

The A580, the East Lancashire Road (abbreviated to East Lancs Road) was designed and built to provide better access to the Port of Liverpool for East Lancashire and Manchester.
The road runs from Liverpool to join the A6 in Swinton, and was designed to eventually have triple highways, although in the event it was upgraded later to dual-carriageway: the section within the Liverpool boundary had always been thus.
It achieved its name since it was originally intended to reach East Lancashire, although this was never carried out:that intended portion has now been superseded by the M62 motorway.
