East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is a public university located in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It is one of the 14 state universities that compose the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It is commonly referred to as "ESU" or "E-Burg" by its students and members of the community. Location

East Stroudsburg University is situated in the borough of East Stroudsburg, located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The university is 45 minutes southeast of the Scranton / Wilkes Barre area and 40 minutes north of Allentown. The New Jersey border is only 2 miles away and is 70 miles from New York City and 90 miles from Philadelphia. The neighboring town of Stroudsburg is the seat and cultural center of Monroe County. ESU is accessible from Interstate 80 and PA State Highway's 33 and 209. Pocono Medical Center, the areas primary medical facility, is located on the edge of the campus.


History of the University

East Stroudsburg University was founded in 1893 as the East Stroudsburg Normal School to prepare teachers; the institution changed its name in 1927 to East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and again in 1960 to East Stroudsburg State College, reflecting the addition of liberal arts and science curriculums. When the legislature created the State System of Higher Education in 1983, the name was changed to East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.


The Campus

The 61 campus buildings are located on 213 acres in the East Stroudsburg community. In addition to the academic facilities, nine residence halls, housing 2,200 students, and a 1,000-seat dining hall are located on campus. The Quad is a popular area on the campus where students convene to hang out, sun-bathe and play sports during the summer, fall and spring months. In addition, The Student Activity Association, Inc., owns Stony Acres, a 119-acre off-campus student recreation area near Marshalls Creek, that includes a lodge, several cabins, a campsite, recreation areas and a lake. The campus is patrolled by the East Stroudsburg University Police Department.


Academic Buildings

The primary academic building is Stroud Hall. This four-story classroom building contains lecture halls, computer and language laboratories, instructional spaces and office areas. Beers Lecture Hall, which opened in 1997, seats 140 students and serves as a distance learning facility.


The DeNike Center for Human Resources houses many of the classrooms and laboratories for the Departments of Health, Nursing, Recreation and Leisure Services Management.


Abeloff Convocation Center hosts many of the on-campus meetings as well as many of the student sponsored concerts and guest speakers.



LaRue Hall, home to the Speech and Hearing Clinic, is operated by the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in connection with its clinical training program. Students provide therapy while being supervised by faculty who hold appropriate clinical certification and licensure.


Reibman Administration Building houses many of the administration offices. In addition, the President's office is located there.


Beers Lecture Hall opened in 1997. It seats 140 students and serves as a state of the art distance learning facility.



Zimbar-Liljenstein Hall is home to the Student Services Center and houses offices, physical education classes and a small instructional gymnasium.


Rosenkrans Hall is where many of the Media Communication classrooms and laboratories can be found. In addition, the tutoring center is located in the west wing of the building.


One College Circle houses the University's president.


Gessner Hall is home of the Chemistry and Physics Departments. The classrooms and laboratories for both departments occupy this building.


The McGarry Communication Center is the campus base for the Instructional Resources Department including the audiovisual, graphics, and television services units. The Communication Center houses two television studios and is the distribution center of campus cable television as well as the community-wide ESU television telecasts. WESS 90.3 FM radio station is also located in the Center.



Moore Biology Hall is the home of the ESU Biology Department and contains a large group lecture hall, a greenhouse and wildlife museum.



The Center for Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism, and Hospitality Management contains a full dining facility as well as kitchen facilities for the Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism, and Hospitality Management Program.



The Fine and Performing Arts Center consists of two theatres, a gallery, concert hall, rehearsal areas, various art studios, and classrooms. Koehler Fieldhouse serves as the primary physical education facility.


The University Center includes a food court, commuter lounge, convenience store, state of the art computer lounge and the University Store.


Dansbury Commons is the main cafeteria on campus. The dining facilities allow students to select from many different daily meal options. Students are presented with an all-you-can-eat buffet style of food selections and they may also choose to order cooked-on-the-spot meals from the three Chef's Stations.


Flagler-Metzgar Center houses the University Health Services. The walk-in health center is staffed by a team of medical professionals and offers a range of health care services, which are covered under the general fee, including evaluation, treatment, referral and health education. The second floor is home of the Office of University Counseling and Psychological Services which offers a range of counseling services to facilitate and enhance the educational, psychological, interpersonal well-being of East Stroudsburg University students.


The Koehler Fieldhouse serves as the primary physical education facility. In addition to classrooms, it houses the basketball, wrestling, swimming, and weight lifting facilities as well as a dance studio and racquetball courts.


350 Normal Street , the former alumni center, is now the center for the East Stroudsburg University Police Department.


The Anhert Alumni Center, located behind the Spangenburg Farm, is the base of contact and information of all members of ESU's alumni.


The United Campus Ministry hosts several religious organizations,including the Christian Fellowship. Religious, cultural, educational and social programs are sponsored by the religious organizations affiliated with the University.


The University Ridge, located on East Brown Street, is a townhouse apartment-style community off of the main campus where residents still enjoy the same accomodations of living on campus. At "the Ridge", students can enjoy the Quad, a gym and fitness center, an entertainment center, apartments that contain wash-and-dry facilities and a shuttle to and from the main campus.


The Observatory, located on Margurette Street, is used by the astronomy and physics departments to observe the stars and constellations in outer space.


The Library

Kemp Library provides students with opportunities to acquire, process and apply information in pursuit of their academic and career goals. Library faculty and staff offer a wide variety of traditional and innovative services. While the library continues building and sharing our print collections, we also provide digital e-books and electronic course reserves. They license a wide variety of full-text databases, most of which are accessible both on- and off-campus. We also provide interlibrary loan and document delivery services to supplement our holdings.


Kemp Library is also a depository of Federal and State (Pennsylvania) documents and includes an Instructional Materials/Educational Resources collection of textbooks, courses of study, children's and young adult literature and other materials in support of our teacher education programs. Assistive technology is available in the library to make our resources fully accessible to differently abled students.


Recreation Center

In 2004, ESU opened its new recreation center, the "Rec Center." This state of the art recreational facility contains an elevated track, various free weight and selectorized weight machines as well as cardio machines. In 2005, the rec center aquatic area opened sporting a regulation Olympic sized swimming pool. The rec center was designed to encourage students to exercise more regularly to promote a healthier campus. In addition to individual programs, there are also group fitness programs ranging from the normal (step aerobics and yoga) to the more exotic (thumb wrestling, blackjack, and square dancing)ESU Rec Center.


Science and Technology Center

In September of 2006, ESU began construction on the new Science and Technology Center. The construction site has been dubbed the "Big Ol'Hole" by the students as little has been done on the project since ground breaking. The building is intended to open in Summer 2008ESU Science and Technology Center.


Campus Media

East Stroudsburg University publishes The Stroud Courier every Thursday. The newspaper covers on campus events and breaking news stories as well as local, state and national news and opinions.


The University is also home to the radio station 90.3 WESS. McGarry Communications Center contains ESU's television and news studio.

Major Programs

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania offers 71 undergraduate major programs, the largest of which (by enrollment) are Gym Teacher Training, Elementary Education, Biological Sciences, Business Management, Psychology, and Secondary Education. ESU recently added majors in Mortuary Sciences and Waste Facilities Management.


Athletics

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania's colors are Red and Black, and the team nickname is the Warriors. All teams compete in NCAA Division II. The Warrior football team was 7-4 in the 2006 football season. The East Stroudsbourg is proud though that this upcoming baseball season they will face local NCAA Division 1 powerhouse Lafayette at the luxurious Class of 78 Stadium. They finished second in the PSAC East to Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.
